Humans have a negativity bias. It is easier to focus on what is going wrong than it is to focus on what is going right. I certainly fall prey to trying to optimize every minute of every day and fixating on what it not working.
Yet I believe in the power of gratitude and make a point to reflect on good moments, often in my journal or at the dinner table. Our family will share both huge and tiny gratitudes, everything from receiving relieving health news to appreciating the sweetness of the strawberries at that night’s meal. The more I make it a point to notice, the more I find, and naming what is working reminds me that some parts of life are simple and straightforward, and that right there is cause for celebration.
