A Prayer for the Election
I don’t think this prayer needs an introduction or explanatory comments.
Good Lord, help us.
We are anxious, on edge, restless. Some of us may be hopeful, but more of us are probably full of despair or resignation or cynicism.
What next? we wonder.
Will our country be able to bear the results? Will those divisions which have grown so, so deep start to close in again, so that maybe we are a little softer and gentler with each other? Is that even possible?
We have to believe it is, God. You want that for us.
Good Lord, help us.
No matter the outcome, may we continue to do your work: loving, tending, repairing, mending, holding, praying, seeking. May we remember we are yours and that our ultimate citizenship resides with you.
Good Lord, help us. Amen.
