A Prayer for Savoring Life's Little Luxuries
Each week, after I write the main post, a few days later, I send an accompanying prayer related to the topic. Selfishly, I am doing in this in part for me: I always am on the hunt for more written prayers. I use written prayers often in my work to pray for larger groups, but I also love written prayers for my personal piety. Sometimes it is nice when I do not have the words to use someone else’s.
The below prayer is in response to my latest post on demanding the good coffee.
God of homemade chocolate truffles that melt on the tongue, God of refreshing cool showers on steamy summer days, God of soft, fuzzy blankets and cozy books in bed,
Thank you for the little things that delight us:
The smell of freshly made sourdough bread emerging from the oven,
The feel of the warm loaf in our hands as we release it from the pan,
The smile of children’s faces as they wait for a bite.
These small indulgences add color and richness to our days.
They remind us that you created us to enjoy creation, and that when we enjoy your creation, we experience a little taste of what it is like for you to smile down upon us.
When we drink the freshly brewed local coffee, or twist our grandmother’s heirloom ring on our finger, or allow ourselves to curl up on the sofa with a book on a gloomy rainy day, or lose ourselves in the hobby that everyone else thinks is ridiculous, let us feel joy, not sheepishness or shame.
May we call ourselves to be present in each moment, sensing, savoring, relishing.
May we take these tiny luxuries as your gifts to us.
May we sense your provision and pleasure as we exclaim: Yum! Amazing! Exquisite! Wow!
Amen.
