A Prayer for Nurturing Friendships
Each week, after I write the main post, a few days later, I send an accompanying prayer related to the topic. I am doing in this in part for me: I always am on the hunt for more written prayers. I use written prayers often in my work to pray for larger groups, but I also love written prayers for my personal piety. Sometimes it is nice when I do not have the words to use someone else’s.
The below prayer is in response to my latest post on friendship.
Triune God,
You yourself are in relationship and you made us to be in relationship—relationship with you, relationship with creation, relationship with one another. Friendship is one of your many gifts for us.
When I feel tired and would rather stay home in pajamas, remind me how good the belly-aching laughter will feel when I go to that book club meeting.
When a friend pops into my mind, may I say a prayer for her right then.
When I notice someone who seems lonely, let me be the one to reach out with a smile and a conversation starter because I too have been lonely and left out before.
When my friend is grieving or celebrating, may he know that I will not shy away; I am present, I am there, I can be counted on.
Lord, help me to be a good friend and also to receive friendship. Friendship is one of the best, most fun parts of this life. Amen.
